Does my student need previous experience?
No. Beginners are welcome, and students will learn how to read music, play an instrument, and perform as part of an ensemble.
How does my child choose an instrument?
Students will be evaluated for several instruments based on physical characteristics, musical aptitude, program needs, and personal interest. The goal is to find the instrument where each student can be most successful.
Does my child need to own an instrument?
Not always. Some instruments may be available through the school, while others may need to be rented or purchased through an approved music retailer. The band director will provide specific information before families obtain an instrument.
What instruments are offered?
Junior high band typically includes flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion.
Is there a band fee?
Yes. The Junior High Band fee is $50, due by September 1. The fee supports the official band polo, student materials, music, supplies, awards, selected meals or refreshments, and other program needs.
Are there additional expenses?
Families may need to provide an instrument rental, method book, reeds, valve oil, percussion supplies, or other instrument-specific materials. A complete supply list will be provided.
When does band meet?
Band is a scheduled class that meets during the regular school day.
Will students perform in concerts?
Yes. Students will participate in concerts and may perform at school, community, or district events throughout the year. Performances are an important part of the course and allow students to demonstrate what they have learned. Families should review the band calendar and communicate conflicts as early as possible.
Can students participate in sports or other activities?
Yes. Many band students also participate in athletics, clubs, and other school activities. Early communication is important when scheduling conflicts occur.
